OnPrem Insights by Union Shares Summer Drinking Trends for High Volume Venues

Union’s latest report shows that Tito’s Handmade Vodka is a summertime favorite and indicates that the week following the 4th of July is the slowest sales week of the season

Austin, TX (June 6, 2023) – As the country heads into its first true post-pandemic summer, Union—a data-driven hospitality engagement platform—has released a new OnPrem Insights report to help bars, restaurants and alch/bev brands prepare for the expected rush, as well as the lulls.

Key takeaways from the report include:

  • Tito’s Handmade Vodka reigns supreme in the summer. Based on Union’s proprietary on-premise ordering data from summer 2022, Tito’s Handmade Vodka sales by dollar share were nearly 60 percent greater than sales of Casamigos, and nearly 194 percent greater than sales of Bud Light.
  • Venues should stock up and staff up for a late-summer surge. According to Union’s data*, the two Saturdays leading up to Labor Day are typically the busiest of the summer, while the Saturday leading into the Fourth of July holiday and the following Saturday in July are usually the slowest. The week after Independence Day sales typically dip and it is traditionally the slowest week of the summer.
  • On holiday weekends prepare for Saturday spikes. The report indicates that Saturdays are usually the leading day for sales on holiday weekends. It also shows that on-premise traffic tends to kick up on Thursdays before an upcoming holiday, but by the following Monday — even on observed national holidays — sales drop significantly.

“The summer is a huge opportunity for bars and restaurants, but it is important to understand the ebbs and flows in traffic,” said Gary Ross, Union’s chief growth officer. “The data within our report provides operators with unique seasonal insights that helps them optimize their offerings and operations during a period when demand can be unpredictable.”
