Modelo may be winning in retail sales, but hospitality engagement platform, Union, reveals that Corona is the most-ordered Mexican lager at bars and restaurants across the U.S.
Austin, TX (Feb. 26, 2024) – While Bud Light’s fall from grace was an opening for Modelo, on-premise sales trends at bars and restaurants are telling a different story. According to a new Mexican beer report from hospitality engagement platform, Union, Corona ranks as the number one best-selling Mexican beer on-premise. Dos Equis comes in at number two, followed by Modelo, with all three brands making up more than 90 percent of all on-premise Mexican beer sales.
“Modelo has been showing the strongest growth out of all the Mexican beer brands since 2022, but Corona still reigns supreme when it comes to on-premise sales,” said Gary Ross, Union’s chief growth officer. “Though Modelo currently represents an overall lower share of Mexican beer sales than Corona or Dos Equis, its growth trajectory is promising and the overall category is starting to rival craft and even mainstream beer.”
According to the report, Corona is the fifth top-selling beer brand overall at Union venues, and in 2023 the brand grew its share of the Mexican beer category by about 1.3 percent, outperforming Dos Equis, which saw a significant drop in sales. Union’s guest ordering data also shows that the April 2023 Bud Light controversy had a direct positive impact for Corona, more so than for Dos Equis or Modelo.
